A murky aura of mystery hung around the Nicole Miller fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. Undoubtably dark, but dangerous, too? The answer is uncertain, hence the enigma in the very fabric of the clothes. Torn, black stockings, leather, and the general ragged look of the show imply menace, but floral prints suggest it's nothing more than a dark fantasy. Furs and forest patterns hint to woodsy locations, but algae and coral-esque prints, beaded embellishments, fishnet stockings, and shimmery fabrics resemble more a tenebrous lagoon. (Not to mention a pair of stygian seahorses (those two words don't go together) that are absolutely terrifying. Not what you'd want to find at Sea World.) Whichever it's supposed to be, gloomy lagoon or dark forest, the message is a clear one of mystery and beauty in a fantastical and whimsically dark way, a very appreciated rarity in the fall ready-to-wear shows of late.
